Music Hall or ‘Stage-Irish’ songs
A man had tried to sell Joe a book with ‘Muirisheen Durkin’ in it, wanting Joe to write down the ones he knows. Joe is irate at the suggestion that he should sing any of those songs. Lucy eggs him on. Finally, to prove his point, Joe sings fragments of stage-Irish songs in a way that thoroughly reveals his opinion of them.
