Joe introduces the prayer by telling the story of a woman, a heavy smoker, whose son was a priest. This woman never bothered saying the prayer, and one day when the priest was home on holiday he was visited by an angel. The angel told him that if his mother didn’t start saying the prayer after smoking the pipe, the whole family would be damned to hell.
Joe gives two versions of this prayer; the translations are his:
Beannacht Dé le h-anam na marbh. ‘God be good to the souls of the departed and everybody belonging to you.’
Beannacht Dé le h-anam t’athar is do mháthar is do chine. ‘May God have mercy on the soul of your ancestors, your father, your mother and yourself when you die.’
