that I signed up, wasn&#8217;t I merry and pleased!<br \/>\nBut the second day I&#8217;d have given the world&#8217;s gold to be done with it.<br \/>\nOn the third day I had eighteen pence from my pay &#8211;<br \/>\nBut if that were taken from me, and as much again, I still wouldn&#8217;t get my pass out.<\/p>\n<p>One day I was down in Galway, and the river was running past;<br \/>\nThere were I&#8217;m sure he fell in love with her.<br \/>\nFor he took her measurements from the ground up to high above her waist &#8211;<br \/>\nand they tell me that&#8217;s the reason she&#8217;s always laughing!<\/p>\n<div class=\"n\u00f3ta\u00ed-bun-leathanaigh\">\n<h2 id=\"t:notai\">Notes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"n\u00f3ta-bun-leathanaigh\">1. The sense of beairt\u00edn slata &#8216;a little bunch of sally-rods&#8217; is elusive in this context. Natives of Conamara who were consulted could only suggest something to do with fishing &#8211; perhaps people fishing from the river bank, or fishing-rods, or even a fish-trap (woven from willow rods). One person explained that it&#8217;s not uncommon for words to crop up in these songs that even the singers themselves don&#8217;t fully understand &#8211; they&#8217;re only repeating what they heard from someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately no recording of Joe singing this song exists in the Joe Heaney Collection, although it appears on the 1965 recording Irish Music in London Pubs (Folkways FG 3575\/Cl\u00f3 Iar-Chonnachta CIC 032).
