The literal translation of <i class=\"cor-cainte-teangan-eile\">faoina l\u00e1sa\u00ed \u00f3ir<\/i> would be &#8216;under his gold laces&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>These two songs, familiar to schoolchildren and Irish language-learners around the country, would likely have been dismissed as &#8216;school songs&#8217; by the people in Joe&#8217;s community.<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">Beidh Aonach Am\u00e1rach<\/cite>, however, represents a venerable type of song which Se\u00e1n \u00d3&nbsp;Tuama termed the <i class=\"cor-cainte-teangan-eile\">d\u00e9bat gr\u00e1<\/i> (&#8216;love debate&#8217;). The subject matter of the song which, as here, takes the form of an argument between a girl and her mother about matters of the heart, has its roots in the <i class=\"cor-cainte-teangan-eile\">troubadour<\/i> and <i class=\"cor-cainte-teangan-eile\">trouv\u00e8re<\/i> traditions of 12th-century France. The translation here is the one Joe himself developed for his students, a fairly literal rendering that has the added benefit of being singable.
