A large sepia image of Tom himself, vignetted by scattered pages of sheetmusic.\">\n\t<\/a>\n\t<figcaption>The <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite> front cover.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is one of the series of entries in the Cartlanna which highlight Joe \u00c9inni\u00fa\u2019s singing in local, national and international contexts.<\/p>\n<p>The Cartlanna include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/baile-ui-lai\/\">a rendition by Joe<\/a> of <cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">Baile U\u00ed&nbsp;La\u00ed<\/cite> which originally appeared as the first track on the B-side of his 1976 album, <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">\u00d3 Mo Dh\u00fachas<\/cite> (Gael-Linn CEF 051; released in 1976). The album was later re-released in 2007 as part of <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Seosamh \u00d3&nbsp;h\u00c9ana\u00ed: \u00d3 Mo Dh\u00fachas<\/cite> (Gael Linn CEFCD 191\u20132), a double CD which combines the original vinyl releases of <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">\u00d3 Mo Dh\u00fachas<\/cite> and <cite>Seosamh \u00d3&nbsp;h\u00c9ana\u00ed<\/cite> (Gael Linn C\u00c9F 028; released in 1971). The CD was itself re-released in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In this entry, we hear <cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">Baile U\u00ed&nbsp;La\u00ed<\/cite> sung by Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom \u00d3&nbsp;Coistealbha (1894\u20131979*) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logainm.ie\/ga\/1167211\">Baile \u2019n tSagairt<\/a> near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logainm.ie\/ga\/18722\">An Spid\u00e9al<\/a>, some 40 miles east of Joe\u2019s native district and about 15 miles west of Galway City. It was taken from the 1977 album, <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite>, recorded, edited and produced by S\u00e9amus Mac&nbsp;Math\u00fana and released by <a href=\"https:\/\/comhaltas.ie\/\">Comhaltas Ceolt\u00f3ir\u00ed \u00c9ireann<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite> was released on 33\u2153 <abbr title=\"Revolutions Per Minute\">RPM<\/abbr> vinyl and has had, to date, no re-release on CD or on any other format. However, the interested reader may be able to find a secondhand copy of the thirty-three.<\/p>\n<p>For readers unfamiliar with Irish, \u2018Ph\u00e1id\u00edn\u2019 is pronounced, roughly, \u2018faa-deen\u2019; to rhyme with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Received_Pronunciation#BATH_vowel\">\u2018southern-centric\u2019 Received Pronunciation<\/a> of \u2018far dean\u2019. \u2018Baile \u2019n&nbsp;tSagairt\u2019 is pronounced similar to \u2018bile-n-toggirt\u2019. For those familiar with linguistic transcription: \/f\u0251\u02d0&nbsp;d\u2032i\u02d0n\u2032\/ and \/bail\u2032&nbsp;<sup>\u0259<\/sup>n&nbsp;t\u0251g\u026art\u2032\/.<\/p>\n<p>*The parish records at <a href=\"http:\/\/cilleinde.ie\/\">Cill \u00c9inde<\/a> give his precise date of birth as 25th March 1894 and his date of death as 29th November 1979. <i>Glacann muid bu\u00edochas leis an Athair S\u00e9an Mac&nbsp;Aoidh as ucht an eolas seo a dheimhni\u00fa dh\u00fainn.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Sleeve notes<\/h3>\n<p>The album\u2019s copious sleeve notes were written by Mac&nbsp;Math\u00fana, John Lewis and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainm.ie\/Bio.aspx?ID=1667\">M\u00e1ire \u00c1ine<\/a> (N\u00ed&nbsp;Dhonnchadha, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/M\u00e1ire-\u00c1ine-N\u00ed-Dhonnchadha-Deora-Aille\/release\/4588342\"><cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Deora Aille<\/cite><\/a> fame), and are found on both the outer cover and an accompanying eight-page European Fanfold (8\u00bd\u2033&nbsp;\u00d7&nbsp;12\u2033) booklet.<\/p>\n<h3><cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite>: spanning generations<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"micil-figi\u00far-aonair-deas\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/00-micil\/mbm\/tom-ph\u00e1id\u00edn-tom_leabhr\u00e1n_cl\u00fadach-tosaigh.jpg\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/00-micil\/mbm\/tom-ph\u00e1id\u00edn-tom_leabhr\u00e1n_cl\u00fadach-tosaigh.jpg\" alt=\"The first page of the booklet accompanying the Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom album. His name is in large Gaelic print in the bottom right hand corner.\">\n\t<\/a>\n\t<figcaption>Front cover of the booklet accompanying <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite>.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As debut albums go \u2014 solo albums especially \u2014 <cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite> is remarkable in that it was recorded and released when Tom was in his eighties. One of a family of twelve, he\u2019d been born toward the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victorian_era\">Victorian Era<\/a> \u2014 in the very same month that Coca&nbsp;Cola was first sold in bottles! \u2014 and yet the album came out in the same year that Apple released <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_II\">its first mainstream personal computer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As is often the case in rural Ireland, if the family weren\u2019t financially well-off they were very rich musically. Mac&nbsp;Math\u00fana discusses this in the sleeve notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rugadh Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom (Tom\u00e1s \u00d3&nbsp;Coistealbha) i mBaile \u2019n tSagairt i m\u00ed na M\u00e1rta 1894. Bh\u00ed d\u00e1r\u00e9ag sa chlann, agus muna raibh m\u00f3r\u00e1n de shaibhreas an tsaoil aca is cinnte go raibh saibhreas ceoil sa tig. Do sheinneadh P\u00e1id\u00edn Tom [athair Tom] an fhead\u00f3g mh\u00f3r, agus \u2019s\u00e9 tuairim Thom\u00e1is n\u00e1r chuala s\u00e9 f\u00e9in duine ar bith n\u00ed b\u2019fhearr n\u00e1 a athair i mbun fead\u00f3ige.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The matter of Tom\u2019s continued vitality at that age, not only in terms of singing, is remarked upon by Lewis in the accompanying booklet and he goes on to observe that Tom (just like Joe \u00c9inni\u00fa himself of course, and many other torch-bearers) represented a social and cultural link that reached back as far as the first half of the ninteenth century:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tom is now 83. He saves his own turf and cooks and bakes for himself in the thatched cottage in which his parents lived the same way of life, his grand-parents before that and his great-grand-parents before that\u2026<\/p><p>\u2026His memories form a mosaic that records every aspect of the native music of the Spiddal area over the past 70 years, and through his father his knowledge extends back into the last century. Tom\u2019s father, P\u00e1raic \u00d3&nbsp;Coistealbha, was born in 1834\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Following this same thread of cultural continuity, M\u00e1ire \u00c1ine, a native of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logainm.ie\/ga\/18812\">An Cnoc<\/a>, about four miles west of Baile \u2019n tSagairt, attests to the way Tom\u2019s singing on this record propagates an ancient fireside musical heritage, keeping it alive in the present day:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ar ch\u00e9ad chloiste\u00e1il t\u00e9ip Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom dom is siar ar bh\u00f3ithr\u00edn na smaointe a thug s\u00e9 m\u00e9 \u2014 siar go dt\u00ed m\u2019\u00f3ige i gCois Fharraige, siar go dt\u00ed na <i>time<\/i>anna\u00ed \u2019sna tithe\u2026 T\u00e1 sampla ceart san gceirn\u00edn seo don chaoi a raibh an ceol i gCois Fharraige an tr\u00e1th \u00fad.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><cite class=\"albam-ceoil\">Tom Ph\u00e1id\u00edn Tom<\/cite>: recorded live<\/h3>\n<p>The tracks on this album aren\u2019t studio recordings. The sleeve notes state that all recording was done at ordinary music sessions, in Conamara and Dublin, where Tom would be at his ease and where those present would be invested in and receptive to the material:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026ag seisi\u00fain nuair a bheadh c\u00f3luadar feili\u00fanach againn agus Tom f\u00e9in ar a sh\u00e1imh\u00edn s\u00f3gha. Na taifead\u00e1in [seo], deineadh iad ag seisi\u00fain \u00e9ags\u00fala i gConamara agus i mBl\u00e1 Cliath idir M\u00e1rta 1973 agus Eanair 1976.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly, the songs were recorded over a period of very nearly three years \u2014 March 1973 to January 1976 \u2014 but unfortunately there\u2019s no listing of when and where each recording took place.<\/p>\n<h3>Digital restoration<\/h3>\n<p>This song was digitised directly from a cleaned, good-condition copy of the vinyl album. It was then digitally restored by <b>Fionn \u00d3&nbsp;Sealbhaigh<\/b> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acadamh.ie\/\">Acadamh na hOllscola\u00edochta Gaeilge<\/a> to exise clicks, crackles and surface noise.
