More specifically, it\u2019s part of the same recording from which we took <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/caoineadh-na-dtri-muire-2\/\"><cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">Caoineadh na dTr\u00ed Muire<\/cite><\/a> (<cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">Caoineadh na P\u00e1ise<\/cite>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/bonny-bunch-of-roses-the-2\/\"><cite>The Bonny Bunch of Roses<\/cite> (2)<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/boyles-bar-28th-july-1978\/\">Boyle\u2019s bar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/wesleyan-university-5th-and-6th-august-1978\/\">Wesleyan University<\/a> video recordings are also part of that series. The Boyle\u2019s Bar filming was done about a fortnight before this item was filmed and the Wesleyan University event actually took place during the preceding weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Documentation prepared at University of Washington for the Joe Heaney Collection \u2014 that is, the original collection of physical recordings as opposed to the Cartlanna \u2014 states that this recording was made at \u2018CABLE ARTS PARTY\u2019 on Thursday 10th August of that year. It doesn\u2019t go into greater detail though, and there\u2019s no indication as to what \u2018cable arts\u2019 actually was.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, enquiries to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/williams\/\">Sean Williams<\/a>, to whom sincere thanks, informed us that this was in fact the <b>Cable Arts Foundation<\/b>. This may actually have been run by Lieberman himself, although various online sources indicate that it was set up by one Russell Connor in 1973 for the purpose of getting arts programming onto cable television in the New York area. The foundation was funded (at least in part and in certain years, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/NEA-Annual-Report-1975.pdf\">1975<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/NEA-Annual-Report-1976.pdf\">1976<\/a>) by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/\">National Endowment for the Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s little ambiguity about the word \u2018party\u2019 though! Regardless of the presence of a running camera, and the focus on discussing matters artistic, it\u2019s clearly an informal gathering of people in a dwelling house, sitting around, chatting, singing a few songs, playing a few tunes and sustaining themselves with victuals appropriate to the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Joe\u2019s comment at the end, <q>that wasn\u2019t too naughty<\/q>, reflects the reason he sang this particular song in the first place. One of those present was the English folk singer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Bellamy\">Peter Bellamy<\/a> (composer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/going-out\/peter-bellamy-the-transports-revived-leading-folk-stars-1-5353433\"><cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">The Transports<\/cite><\/a>) and during in the conversation, Bellamy pressed Joe to sing something <q><em>raunchy<\/em><\/q>.<\/p>\n<p>While the <i class=\"cor-cainte-teangan-eile\">amhr\u00e1n gairsi\u00fail<\/i> does indeed have its place in the inventory of traditional Irish song, as does a line in what might be called \u2018tasteful innuendo\u2019 \u2014 see for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/connla-1\/\">Connla<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeheaney.org\/ga\/an-old-man-came-courting-me\/\">An Old Man Came Courting Me<\/a> \u2014 Joe was, on this occasion, initially disinclined to provide an example of either. At length however, someone suggested <cite class=\"amhr\u00e1n\">As I Roved Out<\/cite>; albeit referring to it incorrectly as \u2018Seventeen Sunday Morning\u2019.
