class="nóta-bun-leathanaigh">This song was among those that Joe sang for Séamas Ennis in 1942, when Ennis was collecting material for the Irish Folklore Commission, now the National Folklore Collection at University College Dublin. See CBÉ 1280, pp. 581–2. Some of the stanzas he sang on that occasion do not appear in the version here however, while others appear here but not in Ennis’ manuscript and still others have lines and couplets swapped about. Perhaps the fact that this is a nonsense song permits a certain degree of improvisation?

Compare this version of the song by Bríd Ní Mhaoilchiaráin (a grand-neice of Joe’s) from 2015, when she succeeded in winning the coveted Corn Uí Riada for the second time.

An interesting discussion by Liam Ó Dochartaigh of the song’s medieval origins can be found in ‘An tAmhrán Bréagach — Iarsma ón Meánaois’, in Foinn agus Fonnadóirí.
