speech, this transcription retains Ennis’ non-standard spellings. (Although of course, the first official written standard for Irish was still over five years away when this transcription was made.)

A performance of this song, containing some of the same verses, was recorded in 1985 from Bríd Bean Uí Chlochartaigh, who was living in Leitir Móir at the time of the recording but who originally came from Carna; also by her son Seán on the same recording (Risteárd Mac Aodha, Na Fonnadóirí: Taispeántas agus Anailís – Fonnadóirí Pharóiste Leitir Móir (Cló Iar-Chonnachta 1996), 60 and tape, side B.

The song also appears to share one or more verses with ‘Péarla Deas an tSléibhe Bháin,’ which was recorded by Sorcha Ní Ghuairim; this latter song also appears in The Doergan Collection of recordings made by Karl Tempel at University College Galway in September 1930, where it was performed by a singer named Ellen Mulrooney.

Both songs share the same metrical structure, and – if the recording by Bríd Bn. Uí Chlochartaigh can be taken as a guide – both employ an air closely related to the well-known ‘Buachaill ón Éirne’. Against this, however, are some notations above the lines in the first stanza in Ennis’s manuscript that appear to refer to notes of the scale; less than half of the stanza bears these notations, but the notes that are there suggest that Joe may have had a different air to this song.

For further verses and some additional discussion, see ‘An Lachóigín Bhán’ in Ríonach uí Ógáin (ed.), Faoi Rothaí na Gréine: Amhráin as Conamara a Bhailigh Máirtín Ó Cadhain (Dublin, 1999), 163-4. Ó Cadhain confirms that the song goes by at least three titles, and that it also appears to have links to ‘Amhrán Rinn Mhaoile’/ ‘Béal an Átha Bhuí’.

This song never made it into any of Joe Heaney’s commercial recordings.

NFC 1280:583. Transcribed from the singing of Seosamh Ó hÉanaí (23), Carna, Co. Galway, by Séamas Ennis in 1942.
