Joe Heaney<\/b> \u2014 in Irish, Seosamh \u00d3 h\u00c9ana\u00ed<\/b> (modern, formal standard spelling) or Joe \u00c9inni\u00fa<\/b> (\u2018daily-use\u2019 form; actually close to that which appears on his birth certificate<\/a>) \u2014 was one of the twentieth century\u2019s greatest exponents of the sean-n\u00f3s<\/i> singing tradition. To this day, his name is known and respected nationally and internationally in that regard. These archives \u2014 the Cartlanna<\/b> \u2014 contain several hundred examples of his singing, storytelling and knowledge of folklore, in Irish and in English, along with copious annotations.<\/p>\n

The Cartlanna are also a celebration of Joe Heaney\u2019s life and work. Most of the archival audio and video recordings available on these pages were made by his students and friends but there\u2019s also a growing amount of new material featuring contributions from his family, neighbours and successors.<\/p>\n

This project is a collaborative venture between University of Galway<\/a> (Roinn na Gaeilge<\/a> \u204a Acadamh na hOllscola\u00edochta Gaeilge<\/a>) and University of Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n
